One of my favorite sounds is that of a pair of woman’s shoes as they hit a hard wood floor, after she has slipped them off, while sinking into my couch. Or her couch. That simple double “clank”, within that context, conjures up excitement, even if I think of it right now, nowhere near my couch or a hardwood floor.
Like smells, sounds are extremely evocative. Just think of how hearing a song can take you away to a different time and place. Certain sounds, like the one I just described, are like songs for me. They take me away. Like Calgon.
When I would hear a woman’s shoes hit the floor, it meant possibility and opportunity. She was planning on staying for a while. She was at ease enough to remove an article of clothing. She was settling in for something, be it a lengthy conversation or a passionate love fest, or something in between. All good. And she was making it easy for me to offer her a foot massage. And I give professional grade foot massages.
All of that came up for me when I saw these shoes in the back of this car.
You should see me when I go shoe shopping with a girlfriend....
