The Mojave National Preserve, in south eastern California, is truly a desert wonderland. I had spent the day there in 2006, and as I was driving toward my final destination in the preserve, I was struck by this awesome view of the road I was on literally disappearing into the mountains. I stopped and took a picture, thinking "I have an idea of where I'm going, but I have no idea what's between here and there. The path I'm traveling enters into something unknown and beautiful as I journey on it." Nice metaphor for life.
Topanga State Park, located in the cliffs and canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, is entirely within the Los Angeles city limits and is considered the world’s largest wildland within the boundaries of a major city. When I went hiking through there in the summer of 2006, I spotted this amazing flower blooming right in the middle of this rock outcropping. Having no idea what species of flora it was, I dubbed it "Desert Rose", because it looked like a rose. And, although not a desert environment, the flower was growing out of a rock. Close enough.
These are some of the finest men on the planet. Friends from Villanova University, I've known most of these guys for over twenty-five years, or more than half my life. I don't see many of them but once a year, at this annual golf tournament, but it's like we never skipped a beat. When we hook up now, we still have as much fun together as we did in college. The fun is a little different now than it was then (we don't drive our vehicles over the walkways, fields, shrubs, greenery, and anything else we felt like, through college campuses at two in the morning, for example), but the energy is the same. There are just as many volts in our electricity now as there was then. It's just that the juice is different now. All the powerful ingredients that made our times together back in college so special are still around today: joy, fun, laughter, passion, mayhem, outrageousness, personality, humor, lots of unique characters, camaraderie, respect, connection, self-deprecation, lots of ribbing, and the most important element of all - and I know I'm going to get hung a boat load of shit for this one - LOVE. One of us had to say it. But it really didn't matter who. Because we all feel it.
Here's to you, my friends of The Corr Cup. Some of the finest men on the planet.
Nothing to see here, people. Let's move along. Nothing here at all.
